Food Focus: Macro Photography
Kale Texture Triptych (Illuminated from underleaf), 2017. Digital Photographs.
Featuring an ingredient of food in an intimate way, these digital photographs are part of a series exploring macro images of food in their raw and cooked forms.
Under scrutiny, the structures and forms of food at a close view can be insightful and enjoyable. We are often dismissive or unaware of the miraculous matter that provides nourishment, quickly dismissing the simple beauty of onion rings to their factor of flavour, or no longer surprised by the vibrant colors of bell peppers.
It is much more worthwhile and perplexing to see the vibrant colors of red produce from the browns of soil in a garden, than to find it on a shelf of a grocery store. To see the fractals of the crinkles of lettuce and kale grow and form, is more perplexing than to witness them in perfect pretty rows ready to be consumed.
Food has more value than the nutrients it contains. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh and personal view to see behind the practical use of something in exchange for seeing the beauty it also contains.
