Coming up with good photographs to take is not always a search and find, like when looking for a perfect landscape vantage point or the right pose to articulate meaning. Sometimes it is just an observation, a witness to the regular happenings in life. I have loved how even the most mundane subject matter can be expressed vibrantly with new perspectives from a camera.
This winter has been cold and swift, so full of events and distractions. It is easy to go days without using my camera, but the nagging and urge to create does not take a break, and so I must make due with what I have around me. Changing jobs or careers can be physically and emotionally draining. I recently changed ventures (my day job or what some would call my real job) and with it I have been very occupied. I have been helping to open a new butchery business this year, and with it comes many great new opportunities to use my creative skills as well as learn some new skills in food preparation.
The Bare Bones Butcher
With my Canon 70D I have been using the new visuals of the butcher as a means for inspiration and to continue engaging in photography. I want my photographs to be less static, and using live models who are not there to pose but in the action of tasks, these live scenes of the butcher have transposed some good images showing motion.
Getting into the habit of bringing my camera to work everyday has been essential, and working somewhere comfortable and of which I have complete access to has made the process easy yet still challenging. When Wesley and Patrick are breaking down meat, I try to get in the cold room and snap some waist level shots that are less intrusive than having a professional photographer come in and set of lighting etc. When we are getting animals delivered, I hope to take advantage of the several seconds it takes to load them on the cart and provide a personal view of it
I want to bring my daily life and experiences more into my artwork. Although it may not be as politically or conceptually significant as some of my other works, just taking the photographs gives my life more value and significance and provides great experience that I can then share!
