Craft to Art: Hardened steel Santoku Knife
Digital Photographs featuring Japanese Santoku style knife.
In these few photographs there is an an emphasis on the craftsmanship and unique embellishments of this 7 inch blade. The hammered indentations and the grainier, less polished surfaces are both there for aesthetic and practical intention. The rough surfaces are useful to minimize any sticking to the blade, and in combination with an extra thin blade, allows for quick efficient cutting food like vegetables as well and meat like chicken and fish.
The Santoku is a medium size and a great general, multi-use tool in a limited space like I have. This one was one hundred dollars, but will be a lifetime knife. As it ages it will begin to patina on the edge, adding a depth of character I'm looking forward to. I'm glad to share some of it's qualities in images, and plan to take more in a more dynamic environment next time.
